How AI Answer Engines Are Changing the Way We Search

By Simon Wilby

For two decades, being found online meant ranking on a search results page. That model is shifting. A growing share of questions are now answered directly by AI systems that synthesize an answer rather than returning a list of links.

This changes the goal. Instead of only optimizing to rank, creators now optimize to be cited, to be the source an AI system draws on when it composes its answer. This emerging discipline is often called generative engine optimization, or GEO.

The fundamentals still matter enormously: clear, well-structured content, accurate information, and machine-readable context through structured data. AI systems favor sources that are unambiguous, well-organized, and demonstrably authoritative.

What is new is the emphasis on being quotable. Concise, factual statements, clearly attributed claims, and consistent information across a site all make it easier for an answer engine to trust and reuse a source.

For inventors and innovators, this is an opportunity. A well-documented body of work, patents, articles, and verified biographical facts becomes exactly the kind of authoritative source that AI systems are designed to surface.
